ANTARCTICA 2025 🌍❄️ DAY 4 –SPRIGHTLY ISLAND & MEUSNIER POINT

”Travelling – It leaves you speechless and then turns you into a story teller – Ibn Battuta”

What a phenomenal day!

We had two onshore landings

Our first stop was Sprightly Island

Sprightly Island is located 1 nautical mile northwest of Spring Point in Hughes Bay. It was named after the British sealer Sprightly, Captain Hughes, who visited the area in 1824-25

We boarded zodiacs (small boats) and cruised around the island marvelling at the glaciers and spotting wildlife.

We were amazed at the wonders of this continent

We returned to a sumptuous lunch back on the ship followed by an enlightening lecture themed ‘Who discovered Antarctica?’

After that, it was time for on-shore landing 2!

Next stop: Meusnier Point.
Located on the western edge of Eurydice Peninsula in Charlotte Bay, Meusnier Point was charted by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in 1897-99 and later named in 1960, by the UK Antarctic Place Names Committee, after French military engineer Jean – Baptiste Meusnier.

Here, we hiked up a snow covered mountain!!!

That definitely was a a brand new experience for my son and I!

It was absolutely fantastic.

I felt so proud of how quickly my son and I immersed ourselves in this activity and quickly adapted using ski poles to climb

The views? Breathtaking!

On our way back to the ship, we spotted some Adelie penguins – we were so excited as this is a rare specie of penguins and we were the only zodiac group that spotted them!

To our delight, we also spotted leopard seals!

Back on the ship we had a dinner with a lovely couple from Hong Kong whom we met on the ship.

The post dinner briefing that evening, revealed that the POLAR PLUNGE will be on offer the next day!!!

🥶 The POLAR PLUNGE is the opportunity you get to jump out of the ship into the freezing Antarctic sea! The water temperature is around or below 0 degrees celcius – sometimes reaching minus 1.8 degrees celcius! 🥶

Would my son and I take the plunge into the freezing Antarctic waters?

I was not sure about that at all but I decided that we will at least get dressed for the occasion and see what happens 😃
