The Drake Passage is an essential route for ships traveling to Antarctica, particularly research vessels and expedition cruises
It connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and is known as one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the world due to its strong currents, massive waves, and unpredictable weather
It is popularly said that the Drake passage could be a ‘Drake Lake'(calm seas) or a ‘Drake Shake!'(turbulent seas)
Unfortunately, we experienced the latter!
The journey started rough, with massive waves (check out the video) and sea sickness hitting hard despite medication
Breakfast was a disaster – literally crashing to the floor as the ship rocked
It was tough, especially watching my son struggle, but we kept our eyes on the prize: the icy wonders of Antarctica!
Are you going through a challenging situation where you’re not sure when it will be over, or if you will ever get through it?
If so, please find below some tips for you as you navigate life’s rough waters:
⛴️ Keep Your Eyes on the Goal: Just like we endured the Drake Shake to experience the wonders of Antarctica, remind yourself of the purpose behind your challenge. Focus on what lies ahead, and let that vision motivate you
⛴️  Prepare and Adapt: Life, like the sea, can be unpredictable
Equip yourself with tools, knowledge, and a flexible plan to weather the storm
⛴️ Take It One Step at a Time: Challenges can feel overwhelming when viewed all at once
Break them down into manageable steps and focus on what you can control in the moment
⛴️ Seek Support:Just as the crew tried to keep us engaged and cared for, lean on those around you – family, friends, mentors, professionals and your faith. You don’t have to face tough times alone
We prayed! We also sought support from a passenger, Chris, who had visited Antarctica 6 times
⛴️ Rest and Recharge: When things get tough, listen to your body and mind. It’s essential to recover your strength so you can keep moving forward
Rest was part of our coping strategy
⛴️ Focus on Small Wins: Even during the hardest moments, look for small victories or moments of relief. These glimmers of hope can help sustain you through the storm
⛴️ Remind Yourself It Won’t Last Forever! Just as the Drake Shake eventually ended, so will your current challenge.
‘This too shall pass’ is one of my favourite sayings during a challenge
⛴️ Turn Challenges into Stories: Every tough experience becomes part of your journey and makes you stronger. Embrace the lessons and use them to inspire yourself and others by telling stories. I am telling mine!
Remember: Storms shape the strongest sailors. Stay resilient, trust the process, and hold on to hope to help you make it to the other side stronger
What lessons have you learned from navigating your own ‘Drake Shakes’?
I’d love to hear your stories!
