“One doesn’t discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.” – André Gide
We took the morning off – our first break after days of nonstop adventure. A slow breakfast, wildlife watching from our balcony, and soaking in the Antarctic grandeur set the tone for the day.
After lunch, we attended a presentation on the Port Lockroy Project, a historic Antarctic research base housing a museum, a gift shop and the world’s southernmost post office.
The United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) volunteers who run the base live in extreme conditions – no running water, limited food supplies, and a home among the gentoo penguins in the freezing cold.
They endure months of isolation for the sake of history and conservation.
Their sacrifice moved me deeply and I am glad that I had a chance to tell them at the session, how appreciated they are.
After the presentation, we boarded the zodiacs and visited the actual Port Lockroy base. Here we had an opportunity to support their research by shopping at their souvenir gift shop.
I also opted to adopt and name a penguin!!!! (picture attached)
Guess what name I gave my penguin?
A plush replica penguin and an adoption certificate now sits on my desk – a reminder of this unforgettable experience and the evidence of my commitment to Antarctic research 🐧
All adoption proceeds go to support the UKAHT research work
✉️A major highlight of our visit was sending postcards from the Port Lockroy post office – the southernmost post office in the world!
Yes, mails from this post office actually get sorted and delivered 😊
🐧Key reflection:
This penguin colony smells intense – like a chicken coop on steroids. But the researchers? They told us that visitors say it smells bad but they don’t even notice the smell anymore. They have adapted to it.
It made me think: On a separate note, what unpleasant thing have we become so accustomed to, that we no longer notice it or question it?
What “penguin colony” do you live in or face daily?
Why do you live in it?
Is it for a great cause?
If not, do you need the support of a Coach in stepping out of it?
