Many experienced leaders experience self-doubt.
I see this often in my Coaching Sessions.
Most of us have experienced it at one point in our career or the other.

That quiet, nagging voice that whispers: β€œI’m really not ready yet.”

Sometimes it sounds like:
πŸ€” The shoes are too big to fill
πŸ€” I don’t really deserve this expanded / more senior role
πŸ€” I want the promotion but what if I fail and tarnish my image
πŸ€” Others are more skilled, more articulate, more confident. I don’t want to show myself up

And so the voice suggests waiting.

Passing on the opportunity.

Telling yourself you’ll be ready next time. But when will the β€˜next time’ actually be? And what will have changed?

The real question is:
How do you convert self-doubt into a well founded confidence that enables you press ahead with optimism?

Here are some realisations that often surface in my coaching sessions:
πŸ’ Moments of self-doubt are human and far more common than we admit. Persistent self-doubt, however, becomes a barrier to progress and can quietly hurt your career.
πŸ’ Self-doubt is often fuelled by internal pressure. What story are you telling yourself about how you measure up? And who are you measuring yourself against?
πŸ’ Self doubt can also be also shaped by external pressure: expectations from society, family, peers, or the roles we think that we should be playing.

Here’s the key distinction I see in confident professionals:
➑️ They don’t allow doubt to fester
➑️ They face uncertainty with preparedness, belief in their capabilities, agility and optimism

Self-confidence sounds like:
🎯 β€œI don’t know exactly how this will turn out, but I trust myself to figure it out and to ask for support if I need it.”

This kind of confidence is built through experience, reflection, learning, and stretching – by daring to show up before you feel fully ready.

When viewed this way, doubt is no longer a stop sign but a signal that you are experiencing a human emotion,Β that needs to be reframed.

A useful reframe:
✍️Certainty seeks guarantees
✍️Self-confidence recognises uncertainty and prepares to respond with agility
✍️Confidence grows, not when challenges disappear, but when we recognise our capability to navigate them.
